Retired Civil War veteran. As a lieutenant in command of the Chicago Board of Trade Battery. Griffin fired the first shot at the Battle of Chickamauga and was wounded at the battle of Murfreesboro. He was also involved in other important battles of the Army of the Cumberland, and after the war he was a member of the Frank P. Blair Post G.A.R. He was a descendant of Governor Trumbull.
