Joseph Charles Drennan was the son of Joseph D. and Phoebe H. Norris Drennan. He was the brother to Mary Ann Drennan McKinney who married George McKinney and brother to Elizabeth E. Drennan who married William Osborn McKinney.

Joseph came to Texas with his family in the 1850's or 1860's. He came from South Carolina to Alabama to Texas. Some of the travelers in the wagon train were the Wells, McKinneys, Conners, Campbells and a bunch more. In 1870 he was living in Coltharp with wife Mary J. (born in Mississippi) and three children, including 4 month-old Phoebe J. In 1880 he was a widower, still in Houston County, with those same three children, including 10 year-old Phoebe, plus one more child age 2. His wife may have died when that child was born. His sister and her two children were living with him, probably to help care for all those children.
