Prayer services for Virgie Lu (McKenzie) Hale were held Sunday, Oct. 2, 2011, at St. Joseph Church in Union City with Deacon Lloyd Menz officiating. Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, Oct. 3, 2011, also at St. Joseph with Rev. Mark Mason officiating. Burial followed in the St. Joseph Cemetery. Services were under direction of Huber-Benson Funeral Home.

Mrs. Hale died Sept. 29, 2011, at Spanish Cove Retirement Village in Yukon. She was born April 7, 1923, in Lindsay. Virgie grew up in Garvin County, graduated from Cox High School and attended Phillips University. During World War II she worked at Will Rogers Field as a junior aircraft electrician and receptionist. After the war, she was a receptionist with Dunn and Bradstreet and a senior clerk in public relations at the Oklahoma Employment Security Commission. The last job she held before getting married was assistant bookkeeper for an oil lease company.

On Jan. 29, 1949, she married Harold "Ed" Hale and they resided on a dairy farm northwest of Minco. She was a member of St. Joseph Church, Third Order of St. Francis, Bible Study, Prison Ministry and FCI in El Reno, DCCW, Altar Society and Hazel Dell Homemakers Extension Club.

Ed and Virgie were married 57 years. Ed preceded her in death on Jan. 2, 2007, and in 2008, Virgie moved to El Reno to reside at St. Katharine Drexel Retirement Center.

Virgie was also preceded in death by her parents, John William Zachariah McKenzie and Mary Elizabeth Rice McKenzie, and a son, Paul.

She is survived by a son, Jason Hale of Ada; three daughters, Louise Sedlacek of Enid, Rebecca Michels of Owasso and Nancy Holthe of Okarche; sisters, Lola Vae Lawrence of Oklahoma City and Rosa Nell Montalto of Jamul, Calif.; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
