Ted and I worked hard for many years in our own business and suddenly in 1971 with retirement upon us, we didn't have a hobby," Ruth Boeckman recalled. Luckily, Ted Boeckman met George Hunter, a woodcarver, at Kettering's Rose E. Miller Recreation Center and became interested in the art of woodcarving. He bought a jigsaw and some good sharp knives, kind. Ruth resurrected her interest in painting and together they started to create decorative wooden items. Once again, they were working together. At first they started making tiny shoes at their Lincoln Park Boulevard home in Kettering. "Maybe because they were easy to do," said Boeckman, co-owner with Fritz Fisher of the Dayton Packing Co. "But quickly we took to carving and painting birds and other wildlife."

BOECKMAN SHOWS a handsome blue jay perched on a piece of driftwood, a polished dog, a squirrel complete with branch all carved from one piece of wood. Some are varnished, some stained. He uses balsa, pine, basswood and buckeye in his carving and his wife favors acrylics for quick drying. From bird books, pictures in magazines and from their own observations, the Boeckmans have carved goldfinch, quail, canaries, wrens and nut hatches. "We like to try new birds every so often," says Mrs. Boeckman, who at one time "stood on market" with her husband selling beef, veal and lamb from the packing house. "Those were the days when the Wayne Avenue market and the downtown market were flourishing," says Boeckman, as he handles a block of wood ready to carve around the pattern he has drawn on it.

THE BOECKMANS, married 45 years, are parents of three grown children, eight grandchildren and three step-grandchildren. The couple's interest in woodcarving isn't the money, but a tiny wood bird (a cardinal for Ohio) on a pin is a big seller at Rose E, Miller. They are members of the Bruckner Woodcarvers in Troy, the Kittyhawk Carvers, which meets at Lohrey Recreation Center, and the National Woodcarvers Association. "It's a great way to meet people and enjoy something we both like to do," Mrs. Boeckman said.
