Mary Nancy VanRy Gunther
1921 – 2012
A long, full life came to a close May 22, 2012, when Mary Nancy VanRy Gunther, age 90, passed to the other side to greet all her siblings, parents, husband, and many, many friends. Mary was born December 23, 1921, in Rotterdam, South Holland, Netherlands, The sixth of ten children of Jacobus Jan VanRy and Adriaantje Noordzij VanRy. She came to the U.S. with her family at age two, and was proud to grow up as an American. They lived on Stratford Ave. in Salt Lake City, and Mary stayed in touch with childhood friends forever after. She worked for Arden's Clothing Store for four years, JC Penney for seven years, and ZCMI at the Cottonwood Mall for 31 years. Customers trusted her opinion, as she had a keen eye for fashion and fit, and wasn't afraid to tell them the truth.
Mary was a faithful member of the LDS church all her life, had many callings, but especially loved teaching Primary and Sunday School. She loved children, and was always known for her friendly, determined and industrious nature. She never went to bed with a messy house, and never turned anyone away hungry.
Mary met Horst Werner Gunther at her brother Ott's soccer game, and though Werner knew instantly that she was the one, she took a little convincing. They wed in the Salt Lake City LDS temple, June 7, 1939, and had sixty-one years together before Werner died in 2001. Survived by her three sons, Richard (DeeAnn), Robert (Ingrid) and Randy (Joyce) Gunther, 10 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren.
Many thanks to her Hospice workers and her neighborhood friends Linda, Tamara and Susan for all their hard work and diligence in caring for Mom till the end.
