Drew S. Pinkerton died early Tuesday morning at the age of 56, following a lengthy battle with cancer. Mr. Pinkerton, a partner in the law firm of Anchors Smith Grimsley, was one of Florida's preeminent criminal defense attorneys. He was involved in many of the most highly publicized criminal cases in the history of Northwest Florida.

Mr. Pinkerton served with the State Attorney's Office from 1978 to 1989 and was the Chief Assistant State Attorney for seven years. Following his tenure with the State Attorney's Office, Mr. Pinkerton pursued a career in criminal defense. During his distinguished career, Mr. Pinkerton earned the Florida Bar's highest criminal law designation as a Board Certified Criminal Trial attorney. He achieved certification from the National Board of Trial Advocacy and was selected as one of Florida's Legal Elite in 2008, a designation reserved for the top attorneys in the state of Florida. He also attained an AV rating which represents the highest designation of professional abilities and ethical standards.

In addition to his law practice, Mr. Pinkerton served as Chairman of the Judicial Nominating Commission for the First Judicial Circuit and as a member of the First Judicial Circuit Grievance Committee.

Mr. Pinkerton was born in Auburn, Ala., and grew up in Pensacola, Fla., having moved there in 1960. He graduated from the Pensacola Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1971 where he served as president of the senior class. He attended the University of the South, Sewanee, Tenn., graduated from Auburn University in 1975 and from Cumberland School of Law in 1978.

Mr. Pinkerton was preceded in death by his father, Dr. Shelton Pinkerton, who practiced veterinary medicine in Pensacola for nearly 30 years.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 33 years, Carolyn; and his daughter, Lauren. Other family members include his mother, Dorothy Reeves Pinkerton; sister, Sharon Pinkerton; father and mother-in-law, Thomas M. and Mary Pace; brother-in-law, Thomas M. Pace, Jr.; sister-in-law, Frances Pace Blake; and brother-in-law, Glenn M. Blake; niece, Courtney Blake; and nephew, David Blake; loving aunts, uncles, cousins and innumerable close friends. Mr. Pinkerton also leaves behind his law partners and dear friends, Don Anchors, Jim Grimsley, Rick Petermann, W. Scott Foster, Steve Bauman, Tim Shaw, Jeff McInnis and Shiraz Hosein.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 10, 2009, at St. Simon's on the Sound Episcopal Church, and the memorial service will be at 11 a.m., Friday, Sept. 11, 2009, at Christ Episcopal Church in Pensacola.
