SAUNDERS - On April 7, 1890, Emanuel Saunders, in the 64th year of his age.
Relatives and friends of the family are respectfully invited to attend the funeral, from the residence of his son, William Saunders, Lansdowne, Delaware county, on Thursday afternoon next, at 2 o'clock. Interment at Fernwood Cemetery.

Note. A search was made by a Findagrave volunteer, but the stone was not located."

In researching my family tree through handwritten notes compiled in the 1950s by the late Rev. F. Elwood Perkins, first cousin three times removed of Martha Anderson Saunders, and Kenneth Dolan, 2x great nephew of Emanuel A. and Martha Ann Anderson Saunders, I encountered the following:

Martha Ann Anderson b. 9/3/1827, d. 9/12/1892 in Hammonton while visiting her brother Samuel
m. on 9/5/1847 to
Emanuel A. Sauders b.1826?, d. 1890, policeman/civil servant, lived at 721 N. 42nd, Phila. moved to Lansdowne

There was nothing in Rev. Perkins' or Mr. Dolan's notes to indicate that Emanuel had taken up blacksmithing. A public records check reveals that there was an Emanuel Sanders in Pennsylvania who was a blacksmith, however he was ten years younger than our subject, resided in Cumberland County at the time of his demise, did not pass away until 1916, and was interred at Enola.

US Census records from 1860, 1870, and 1880 for Emanuel and Martha Ann Saunders mention the children Mary, Emma or Emily, Charles, William, Anna or Annie, John and Lillie, the occupation of police officer/laborer/US government employee for Emanuel, and confirm the family residence in Philadelphia. The street address is in the vicinity of where Martha grew up (Blockley Township, PA), and more than one Saunders family is listed in earlier Censuses in the same neighborhood (prior to 1850, the Census only lists the head of the household's name). A map of Philadelphia made by Scull and Heap in 1751 shows a Saunders residence midway between the Schuykill River and Cobb Creek, on what is now known as Market Street. Emanuel may be descended from this family.

Since Martha and Emanuel's marriage date from the Perkins notes is just two days after Martha's coming of age of consent, she and Emanuel probably knew one another from the Blockley neighborhood. Their first child, Mary, was born about 1848, according to the Census, which is also consistent with a marriage year of 1847. There is no record that I can find of Emanuel and Martha in the 1850 Census. By 1850, Emanuel and Martha likely had three children: Mary, Emma or Emily, and Charles, who are all referenced in later censuses. New Jersey census records from 1850 were lost or destroyed. It is possible they resided in their early married years in NJ, but by 1860, they are well documented at the 42nd Street address.

Martha Saunders' memorial, linked to this memorial in the Family Links section prior to my obtaining a transfer of Emanuel's memorial, coincides with family records that state that Martha Ann Anderson Saunders passed away while visiting with her brother Samuel in Hammonton on September 12, 1892. The above linked burial record for Martha names Fernwood as the interment place. Family notes also mention that Martha Ann Anderson Saunders was buried at Fernwood. It is unclear to this researcher where the plot information came from, but graver William Nees did attempt to photograph the grave without success, as there was no marker on the alleged plot.

The only material changes I have made to this memorial are the addition of the middle initial and the expanded bio, as per family records. Discrepancies I see between this record and family records are year of birth (but note that both the death record birth year ("1825") and the family record birth year ("1826?") were estimated by the documentors), and the occupation of "blacksmith", which does not coincide completely with either family or available census records, and correct spelling of last name (in handwritten family records his last name is listed as both "Sauders" and "Sanders"). I can find no census record of any other Emanuel Saunders, Sanders or Sauders even remotely close to a birth year between 1825-1826 other than the aforementioned US Census records.

If Martha was inadvertently linked to this memorial, and my 2x great aunt and uncle Martha and Emanuel's graves are elsewhere in the cemetery, I apologize to the relatives of Emanuel, blacksmith of Lansdowne, who is not mentioned in any other US record than this death record if he is not one and the same person as Emanuel Saunders, the former policeman of Philadelphia, late of Lansdowne, husband of Martha Ann Saunders and father of Mary, Emma, Charles, William, Anna, John and Lillie.

Thanks to Meges for initiating the memorial, to Mary Harrell-Sesniak for transfer of the memorial, and to William Nees for linking Martha to the memorial and adding an enlargeable photograph of the death certificate to the memorial.

Of Note: Researcher William Nees has located a death certificate of John B. Cavernow, son of Annie Saunders Cavernow, that lists his mother as 'Elizabeth Saunders'. Our cooperative research continues . . .
