Ioannis' original middle name was Panagiotis and was his Father's GIVEN name. Ioannis' death certificate shows the Americanized version of his Father's given name, that is, Peter. Oddly, the correctly transcribed given name of "Panagiota" is listed for his Mother.

Ioannis was born in Vasilakion, Regional unit of Laconia, Peloponnese, Greece, a place that was formerly known as "Tarapsa".

Originally, Ioannis came to America from Paris, France in 1903 and was listed in a ship manifest under the name of "Jean Alexakis". According to his 1915 ship manifest, he spent from 1903 until 1912 in America. When he came back to America in 1915, he came with a bride, Panagiota (aka "Pota" and "Pearl") Sakellariou.

Ioannis and Panagiota had six children together, that is Peter, George, James, Alice, Christina, and Stella. All of those children were born in Erie County, Pennsylvania.
