Bernarda "Bernie" L. Sánchez, age 96, a resident of Santa Cruz, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 26, 2012.
Bernie was preceded in death by her husband, Joe G. Sánchez, parents, Sostenes and Amada Lucero and beloved brother, Tom Lucero.
Bernie was a primary school teacher in the Española Valley for 35 years.
Bernie is survived by her daughters, Loyola Salazar, Lorraine Gurulé, Mabel Willaman and her husband, Mike and Sandra Sánchez and her husband, Rosario Pérez, grandchildren, Daleen Martínez, Damon Salazar, Dean Gurulé, Janelle Borrego, Michelle Robbins and Karla Matts, sisters-in-law, Celsa Lucero, Stella Wheeler and Louise Salazar, brothers-in-law, Raymond Sánchez and Paul Sánchez, 12 great-grandchildren and many other loving relatives and friends.
Public visitation will begin on Wednesday, May 30, 2012 at 6:00 p.m. in the Sangre de Cristo Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory with a rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian burial to be celebrated on Thursday, May 31, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at La Iglesia de Santa Cruz de la Cañada. Burial to follow at the Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in Santa Cruz with the following serving as pallbearers, Andrew Lucero, Damon Salazar, Andy Robbins, Dean Gurulé, Jeff Borrego and Jared Matts. Honorary pallbearers will be Greg McKenzie, Andrew Sánchez, Donald Archuleta and Clara Dougherty.
