Slain Sheriff's Deputy-Hamilton County Sheriff's Deputy Donald Bond on September 6, 2001 became the first Hamilton County Sheriff's Department officer shot and killed in the line of duty in nearly 80 years. Hamilton County Sheriff John Cupp stated that Deputy Bond was shot at Nunley's Produce in the 9000 block of East Brainerd Road in the early morning hours. He had stopped at the produce stand to investigate a suspicious vehicle. Deputy Bond was found beside his patrol car and had been shot nine times with a MAK 90 assault rifle. The officer's pistol and part of the protective vest he was wearing were missing from the scene. A suspect was charged and later convicted of first-degree murder. He was sentenced to death by a Hamilton County jury.
