The son of Joseph & Mary (Wolf) Adams, in 1860 he apparently was living in Carroll Township, Perry County, Pennsylvania, but that is unconfirmed, and he is not found in that census. He stood 5' 8" tall and had dark hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he was drafted in Carlisle October 16, 1862, mustered into federal service at Camp McClure, Chambersburg, November 1 as a private with Co. C, 158th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), promoted to corporal, and honorably discharged with his company August 12, 1863. He also enlisted with the regular army at Carlisle February 21, 1865, assigned to the U.S. General Medical Services, and discharged March 31, 1868, at Carlisle Barracks, a private.

He married Henrietta E. Myers and fathered Alice (b. 08/16/65). Cause of his death is listed as "arteriosclerosis" with "acute indigestion" a contributing factor.
