Edith Janice Stephenson

Edie was born on Nov. 16, 1928, in Mancos, Colo., to Millard R. Malone and Daisie Belle Pratt. She passed away May 22, 2012, in Chino Valley, Ariz.

Growing up, Edie was active in Girl Scouts, played basketball for her high school, was a cheerleader and loved to ice skate. She reminisced often about her life growing up in Mancos, and story after story always included someone in her family. On May 23, 1946, she married Charles C. Stephenson in Aztec, N.M. They moved around the first several years as Charles was in construction. Charles finally settled the family in Phoenix, Ariz., around 1956, and Mom set about raising their five children.

She instilled in us that family is everything - you looked out after each other. As we grew, graduated and left home, grandchildren began filling her empty nest. Her greatest joy was having the house filled with visiting children and grandchildren. This was even so in her last days; she knew family was there and felt the love we had for her.

Edie was preceded in death by her parents, several siblings and her husband Charles. Surviving are siblings Harve (Beverly) Malone of San Diego, Calif., Carolin (Jim) Goza of La Plata, N.M. and Sandy (Charles) Rogers of Las Vegas, Nev.; children Terry (Cathy) Stephenson of Montrose, Colo., Tim (Cindy) Stephenson of Camp Verde, Ariz., Janice (Dennis) Simpson of Nutrioso, Ariz., Barbara (Preston) McGirr of Chino Valley, Ariz., and Jim (Debbie) Stephenson of Glendale, Ariz.; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Edie is also survived and will be deeply missed by several nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

Services will be Wednesday May 30, 2012, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Chino Valley, 442 W. Perkinsville Road.

Visitation is from 10 to 11 a.m.; services begin at 11 a.m. Internment alongside her husband Charles will be 11 a.m. Thursday, May 31, 2012, at Valley of the Sun Memorial Park, Chandler, Ariz.

"God saw you getting tired and a cure was not to be. So He put His arms around you and whispered, "Come to me." With tearful eyes, we watched you, and saw you pass away. Although we loved you dearly, we could not make you stay. A golden heart stopped beating; hard-working hands at rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us He only takes the best."
