John is believed to have been a South Carolina Confederate in the War between The States. John may have been a schoolteacher in the Edgar Springs, Mo. area, donated land for a school, or school was held at his home because according to Spring Creek Township resident Joseph Riley Kester, he attended a Plyler School as a boy. John Pliler's death notice is listed in Phelps Co. New Era newspaper dated 26, June 1875, he died supposedly of Typhoid Fever. His name is sometimes spelled as "Plyler." He married Rebecca Smith in Rowan Co. N. Carolina on Nov. 2, 1840.
