Elizabeth Slack was baptized 20 Jan 1833 in Timberland, Lincolnshire, England. She came to the US with her mother and siblings in 1841 and the family settled in Verona, Oneida, County, NY.

About Jun 1858 she married John Wesley Vanetta in Syracuse, NY. By the 1860 census she was living in Chicago by herself. According to information in a Civil War pension application, her first husband was killed about 1864 in a gambling hall near Gold Hill, Nevada.

About 1864-1865 Lizzie moved to St. Louis where her mother and sister then lived. Early on she shaved about 10 years from her age. For the rest of her life she maintained she was born in 1842 or 1843.

On 29 Apr 1869 In St. Louis she married William C. Farnsworth who was her first cousin once removed. William and Lizzie lived in Chicago for many years until William's health forced them to move to the Soldiers and Sailors Home in Quincy, IL in 1914. William died there 5 May 1917. Apparently Elizabeth had a stone erected for him and had her name and birth year carved on it.

However, on 10 Aug 1920 she married Edward Baker, another Civil War veteran who also lived at the home. Elizabeth died before Edward and is actually buried beside him rather than William Farnsworth.
