MARSHALL was the son of Thomas Marsh Ferree & Esther Ann Nelson. He was born on the family farm in Hillsboro, Illinois. He was only 8 years old when his father, who was working sprinkling the streets in St. Louis, Missouri, died of cholera. He returned to the family farm in Illinois before he enlisted on 11 June 1862 as a private in the 6th Missouri Volunteer Infantry, Co. H. He was captured at Manassas, VA on 30 Nov. 1863 and taken prisoner. He died at Andersonville Prison, Sumter, Georgia on either 10 or 11 Sept. 1864. He was only 24 years old. He died of Scorbitus (scurvy). He is buried at Andersonville in grave #8401. The first initial on his headstone is incorrect. Also, the State in which he served is incorrect. One of his first cousins, Richard L. Ferree, also died in Andersonville. He had a brother & other first cousins who also fought in the Civil War.
