His burial in Sunset Cemetery derives from his status as a Private in McCellan's (sometimes Barker's) Dragoons - a Cavalry unit which formed part of Company H, 12th Regiment Illinois during the Civil War of 1861-1865.


Born in 1838, at the height of unrest over the right of the general population over the issue of civil enfranchisement, Henry was baptised in St. Mary's Church, Newington, on the Kennington Park Road. It is part of the Diocese of Southwark, London. But Newington is an old parish in part of the old Kennington Common, an historically important area for civil activity.


His father and grandfather were considered 'Gentlemen'. Robert his grandfather was a Gentleman of Hackney.


Hackney is north of the Thames.


The Newington - Kennington area is entirely in London on the south bank of the Thames.


1847, Henry's mother, Martha Lloyd, died.

She was born 1816 St. Mary-Newington, Surrey.

She died at St. Saviour, Southwark, London.

Buried at Nunhead, Southwark, London.


In 1851 - Henry's father, Edmund Simmons Fish is the listed as the Licensed Victuallar of the Welsh Harp, 23 Aylesbury Street, Clerkenwell, London

Enlisted 8 Feb 1861 as a Private - Illinois.

Enlisted in McCellan's (Barker's) Dragoons, well known to Chicago residents during the Civil War, on 02 Aug 1861.

Mustered out on 25 Dec 1862.

Transferred to Company H, Illinois 12th Cavalry Regiment on 25 Dec 1862.

Barker's/McCellan's Dragoons later became part of Company H. 12th regiment - Illinois in 1862.

It is not quite clear when and how Henry Fish met Selener Belfield, but the couple married September 1, 1870 in Chicago where they lived and raised their children. The documentation was probably lost in the Chicago Fire.

His residence in 1875 was still Chicago, Illinois.

By 1876, he and Selina were running their own Printing Business and they continued to live in Chicago.

By 1896 at age 58, the directory listing for Henry's business has begun to show Selena's name as well in the directory listing.

He was buried in Sunset Cemetery, Quincy, Adams co., Illinois - This cemetery is Illinois' National Veteran's

cemetery.
