Mason R. Absher

Marion – Mason R. Absher, 90, of Marion, went to meet his Savior, at 5:05 p.m. on Wednesday, September 9, 2009 at Shawnee Christian Nursing Center in Herrin.

Mason, one of nine children, was born August 20, 1919, in Marion to John R. and Kate (Beers) Absher. On July 25, 1941, he married Imogene (Fairchild) Absher who survives. They have enjoyed over 68 years of marriage.

Mason served his country honorably during WWII for over four and one half years. Prior to being drafted into the Army, he taught school at "Center", a one room country school in Williamson County near Corinth. Upon discharge from the Army, Mason resumed his teaching career in Energy, Illinois and served as school Principal until 1948 when he left the field of education. He founded Absher Motor Sales in 1947 and later was awarded the Nash and Rambler franchise and later expanded into other franchise lines. He and Imogene were active in the retail automobile business until their retirements in 1984 and their love for that business was passed on to their son and their grandsons.

Mason was a lifetime member of Fellowship Lodge #89 Masonic Lodge, A Shriner of Ainad Shrine Temple, a member of New Hope Church in Marion, and a charter member of the Marion Kiwanis Club. He was awarded the coveted "Lifetime Achievement Award" by the Marion Chamber of Commerce in 1998. He served on the Marion Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors from 1982 to 1984. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Bank of Egypt for many years and later served on the Banterra Bank Board.

Mason will be especially remembered by his ability to remember birthdays. He took a great deal of pleasure in contacting people on their special day and brought delight to many year after year.

Survivors include his wife, Imogene Absher of Marion, son Bill Absher and wife Sandy and daughter Betty Jean Bowles and husband Ed; grandsons David Arnold and wife Kim, Michael Absher and wife Cheryl, all of Marion and Col. Kevin Fox USAF and wife Linda of Las Vegas, Nevada. He is also survived by six great grandchildren, Jessica Arnold, Jarrod Arnold, Jordan Arnold, Cole Absher, Reed Absher, and Will Absher; and two brothers, Orie Absher of Chatham, Illinois and David Absher of Marion as well as many nieces and nephews and long-time close friend Earl Parks.

He was preceded in death by his Mother and Father, brothers; Leslie, Clarence, Charlie, Maurice and sisters, Vivian Absher and Lavina Siedler.

Funeral services will be Sunday, September 13, 2009 at 2 P.M. at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home with Rev. Gary Clark officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday evening from 5:00 – 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Masonic rites will be presented by Fellowship Lodge #89 A.F. & A.M. at 7:30 P.M. on Saturday.
