James McElroy, son of Peter and Susanna McElroy, enlisted on November 15, 1861 in Effingham, Illinois and was mustered in on February 16, 1862 in Jonesboro, Illinois. He was a 20 year old single farmer, 6 foot tall, with light hair and blue eyes. In 1850 on the 8th of August, James appears in Monroe, Knox, Ohio with Peter & Susanna as an 8 year old boy. He appears in the 1860 census on the 15th of June in Mason Twp, Effingham, Illinois, with his parents and siblings as a 17 year old. According to the record of burials, found at ancestry, James died on February 8, 1876.
