Petrina came to America in 1883 and joined her brother, Jens, in Halstad, Norman Co, MN. In 1884 Petrina had typhoid and was ill for weeks. She was left with phlebitis in her left leg and suffered from that malady for many years. She lived for a while with a doctor's family in Caledonia, ND and then to Fargo where she befriended Martha Hansen (later Setnan). The two girls went to Minneapolis, MN where M. Petrina (as she came to be called) took a three year nursing course at Asbury (Augsburg?) Deaconess Hospital. She graduated in the fall of 1895, one of the early graduates of their Nurses Training program. She worked primarily as a visiting nurse and nurse-midwife in the Minneapolis area. Family stories were told that she had a black medical bag packed at all times and was often called out in the middle of the night to deliver babies or assist the doctor in treating the sick on house-calls.
Petrina never married and lived her last years in Ebenezer Home in Minneapolis. She was buried on the Setnan lot in Sunset Memorial Park, next to her good friend Martha Hansen Setnan.
Petrina had the following siblings:
Jens Karelius
Anna Martha (1862-1899, Norway)
