Gene was the oldest of two sons born to Glenn and Dorothy. He married Hazel Harris on November 7, 1947, in Kansas City, Missouri. They were the parents of two sons and a daughter. He was an Army veteran of World War II, a member of the Amalgamated Meat Cutters Union, and St. Paul's Church of the Nazarene.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Maxine, and his second wife, Pat. Surviving him are his three children; his brother, Glenn; six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at St. Paul's Church of the Nazarene in Kansas City, Missouri. Interment was at Floral Hills Cemetery.
