J. Allen DeWald, 84, of White Hall Road, Danville, died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002 at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.
Born Jan. 14, 1917, in Madison Township, Columbia County, he was a son of the late Charles C. and Harriet L. Henderson DeWald.
A 1937 graduate of the former Turbotville Vocational High school, he received certification in radio and electronics repair from the former National Radio Institute.
During the 1930s, he played banjoa nd violin with the "Sod Busters" on WKOK Radio station, Sunbury. In his early life, DeWald played baseball with the Reading Giants, where he was known for his pitching skill.
DeWald was the third generation owner and operator of DeWald's Grocery Store, White Hall, and also operated Al's 2-Way Radios Sales and Service there until retiring in 1979. A ham radio operator for over 55 years, DeWald handled messages for the Army during World War II under the Military Amateur Radio Station program. He has had daily communications with other ham enthusiasts in New Zealand and Australia for 33 years. He was a life member of the American Radio Relay League, and for several years, he was the oldest member to complete the Columbia County Fifty, a 50-mile bike race held in Bloomsburg.
A licensed pilot, DeWald Enjoyed Flying across the United States.
A son, Danny I. DeWald, died in 1994. A brother Tom DeWald, also died previously, as did two sisters: Jennie Ellis and Neva Heffelfinger.
He is survived by his wife, the former Betty Jane Lyons, with whom he celebrated a 65th wedding anniversary on Dec. 23; two sons: James R. DeWald, Mausdale; and Rodney A. DeWald, Lewisburg R.R.3; a daughter, H. Ann Hack, Bloomsburg; six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the Williams F. Brooks Funeral Home, 207 Broadway St., Turbotville, with the Rev. Allen F. Acor, pastor of Trinity United Church of Christ, Strawberry Ridge, officiating. Burial will be in White Hall Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
