Commissioner A.C. Gumbert Dies From Brain Tumor
Pittsburgh~April 23~Addison C. Gumbert, 57 years old, Allegheny county Commissioner died at the West Palm Hospital here early today.
Death was caused by a blood vessel tumor in the left frontal lobe of the brain. Gumbert was serving his third term as county commissioner. He had been active in state and county politics during the last 30 years.

Addison was a major league baseball player from 1888 to 1896. He was a pitcher with Chicago, Boston Brotherhood, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and Brooklyn teams. He was a clerk in the Allegheny County Prothonotary's office between playing seasons. He held the record for pitching the longest unfinished game in organized baseball until 1920. He was the pitcher for the Chicago Cubs for that game, which was played against Cincinnati on 02 Jun 1892 and went 20 innings.
When he retired, he became the clerk for the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas, No 1 until Dec 1906 when he was elected Sheriff of Allegheny County. He held that office until 1909. In 1915, he was elected Allegheny County Commissioner, to which his colleagues made him Chairman of the Board. When he was re-elected in 1919, he remained the Chairman. He was an advocate of improvement and progress in Pittsburgh with the building of roads and bridges his main goal. He was key in the building of the 3 'sister' bridges across the Allegheny River. There is a dedication plaque on the 16th street bridge naming Addison and the others involved in the building of the bridge.

The 20 inning tie game, 7 to 7 at Cincinnati was played on June 30, 1892. The opposing pitcher was Tony Mullane and no one scored for the last 15 innings. NOT June 2.
