19th century holiness preacher associated with the Methodist Church and famous for his dying words, "I'm sweeping thru the gates, washed by the blood of the Lamb." The hymn, "Washed by the Blood of the Lamb" is said to have been written as a memorial.

Cookman Institute of Jacksonville, Florida, founded in 1872, in Rev. Cookman's honor, merged with Daytona Normal and Industrial Institute to become what is today called Bethune-Cookman University.
