Joan Gartin, 85, passed away May 24, 2012. Vigil will be at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 31, at St. John's Catholic Church in Yuma. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, June 1, at St. John's Catholic Church in Yuma.

Joan was born on July 11, 1926, to Ambrose and Catherine Blach on their homestead north of Yuma. She was the fifth child of that family and was followed by three more sisters. She attended Hammond School through the eighth grade and graduated from Yuma High School in 1944. She then attended Loretto Heights College in Denver.

In 1946 she started a life-long teaching career at Laird, and the following two years she taught in Wray.

On Aug. 25, 1947, she married Marion Gartin of Wray. They lived in and around Wray for five years. Marion and Joan had two sons, Stafford and Spencer, while they ranched north of Wray. After moving to a farm northeast of Otis in 1952, they had two more sons, Stacy and Stanton, and raised their family there.

In 1955 Joan agreed to finish out a term for one of the local teachers. That restarted her teaching career and was the beginning of a tremendous and enjoyable career in the Otis schools. In 1958, she returned to college to finish her degree and in 1959 graduated from Colorado State College in Greeley and earned her lifetime teaching certificate.

Joan loved working with junior high students and she had great expertise in the language arts curriculum and Colorado history. She had a great respect for her students and her colleagues. Many former students and teachers shared in her retirement celebration in 1991. After retiring, she and Marion continued their ranching operation, followed their grandchildren in their many activities, and enjoyed watching their thoroughbred race horses compete in Colorado and nearby states.

In 2010, Joan was a recipient of the Alumni of the Plains award given by Progressive 15, a non-partisan organization of individuals and agencies that promote and advocate for northeast Colorado. This award is given to individuals who graduated from high school in one of the Progressive 15 counties and have excelled in their profession or have given back to the area.

Later in life, Joan was a resident of the Washington County Nursing Home in Akron and The Legacy Assisted Living Center in Sterling.

She is survived by sons, Stafford and wife Kristina of Seneca, Mo., Spencer and wife Donna of Whitesboro, Texas, Stacy and wife Debi of Morgantown, W.V., and Stanton and wife Sharilyn of Merino. She and Marion had 14 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She is also survived by one sister, Charlotte Wegner of Houston, Texas.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Marion; grandson, Sage Gartin, and granddaughter Sabrina Gartin; also sisters, Avis Willeke, Bonnie Blach, Gloria Norwood, Betty Buchkowski, Annabelle Perlenfein; and brother, Perry Blach.
