ohn DuBois, served in the 26th Regiment of the U.S. Colored Infantry (Civil War) organized on Riker's Island in 1864. John was born circa 1831 and died June 10, 1901. Age 70 years.
DuBois was married to a woman named Hannah Notingham, a housekeeper. They had a daughter named Mary. In 1891, DuBois applied for a veteran's invalid pension. His obituary, published in the New Paltz Independent 10 years later, describes his life in two sentences: "John DuBois, a colored gentleman of Modena, died Tuesday of lung trouble caused by an attack of the grip. He was a member of the G.A.R (Grand Army of the Republic) and a pensioner." ". ~Shirley Anson
