Ella May Adams was born on July 19, 1900 in Alton, NH to Meville Adams and Emma Lillian (Wallingford) Adams. Ella was the youngest of three children born to Meville and Emma Adams, her older siblings being Wallace Meville (b. Nov 22, 1894), and Albert Warren (b. Oct 29, 1896 or 1897). All of the children were born in Alton, NH.

Ella never married. She worked as a telephone operator in Alton for many years, and at about the age of 40 moved to Hyde Park, Massachusetts where she worked as Assistant Librarian at the Hyde Park branch of the Boston Public Library (BPL). Ella retired from the BPL in her seventies and climbed Alton's 1786 foot high Mount Major at the age of 74.

At the age of 100, on Aug 12, 2000, Ella died of congestive heart failure in Hyde Park, MA, and was buried in the family grave in Alton, NH.
