Letter Informing Wife of Col. Clark's Death
Van Wirt [Wert], Ga.
Oct. 8th 1864
Mrs W H Clark
Madam-
Your gallant
husband was mortally wounded Oct. 5th 1864 in the assault by French's
Division upon the heights of Altoona [sic].
I carried him from the field and
left him breathing faintly but
dying Surely. He drew me to him
and requested me to take charge
of his horse, Sword, pistol and
Spurs and send them home at the
first opportunity. He requested
his Sword, pistol and Spurs to
be given to his "little boys" and express-
ed a hope that they would remind
them in after years of a father
who had died gloriously in de-
fense of his country.
He requested me to assure you
that he loved you to the last, and [this starts the 2nd page of the original.]
that you would remember him
as a gallant soldier who received his
death wound in leading a charge
upon the enemy's stronghold.
I have no time my dear Madam,
to be more circumstantial-order
to march has been given.
I will only assure you in conclusion
of the gallantry and good conduct
of Colonel Clark upon the battlefield.
His honored family has been illa-
vated [sic] by his glorious death in a
grand cause.
Most Respectfully
Madam. Your obt=Servt=
G.G. Dillard
This letter as well as letters that my great-grandfather, William Henry Clark, wrote to his sons during the war are in my possession. This one was two pages that someone taped together to make one long page. The sword and spurs are in the possession of my cousin. I tried to type this in the original format. See photo of the original in my gallery.
