Mr. Gale L. Nash, age 63, a lifelong resident of Custer, passed away at his home Sunday, March 3.
Gale was born Jan. 4, 1939, in Custer to Thomas Raymond and Janie (Kreigh) Nash. He attended Custer schools and in high school was an avid athlete. One of his treasured accomplishments was scoring a record-setting 48 points in a single game in 1957 versus Manistee S. Joe, a record he held at MCE until 1976. It still stands as 13th highest in Mason County. Gale also held track records in high hurdles, high jump and shuttle hurdles before graduating from Custer High School in 1957.

On Nov. 9, 1957, he married Judith Lasley at Sugar Ridge Church of the Brethren. She preceded him in death on Oct. 14, 1998. He was also preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Richard and Victor; and his sisters, Irene Keffer, Betty Culver, Catherine Andrulis, Florence Ray and Erta Ray.

Gale enjoyed many activities in the community, one of which was coaching boys summer baseball. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and two-tracking. He worked for many years at Sanders Meats as a meat cutter and in delivery. He then worked as a carpenter with West Shore Builders and then as a member of the Local #100 Carpenter's Union from which he retired in 1990.

Gale will be lovingly missed and remembered by his children, Steven (Kay) Nash of Custer, Debra (Ted) Palma of Walhalla, Mark (Stella) Nash of Custer and Denise (Brian) French of Marion; his grandchildren, Katie, Stephanie and Kyle Nash, Michael and Alyssa Palma, Mark Nash Jr., Matthew and Jade French, James Nash French, and Andrew and Ashley French; brothers, Raymond Nash and Robert Nash of Ludington, and Wayne Nash of Midland; sisters, Hazel Sniegowski of Custer and Shirley Westover of Calif.; his brothers-in-law, Dean (Joyce) Lasley of Ludington and David Lasley of Los Angeles; his sister-in-law, Julie Lasley of Desert Hot Springs, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Mr. Nash will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, March 9 at the Stephens Funeral Chapel in Scottville with Pastor Joe Whitaker of Beacon Ministries officiating. Interment will take place in Riverside Cemetery in the spring. Visitation will be on Saturday from 10:30 a.m. until the time of the service.

Those who wish to make memorial contributions are asked to consider Scottville and Custer Fire Dept. First Responder units.
