Gilbert Franklin Ridout, 80, of Petersburg, passed away Saturday, May 22, 2010. He was born March 6, 1930, and was the son of the late Lawrence Franklin and Myrtie Pettway Ridout. Mr. Ridout was predeceased by his loving wife of 49 years, Patricia Bain Ridout, and his five sisters, Margaret Titus, Gaynelle Overmyer, Myrtle Johnston, Frances Lucas and Evelyn Titus. Mr. Ridout is survived by his three daughters, Susan Ridout Jones and husband, Charles, of Chesapeake, Va., Carole Ann Churn and husband, Wynne, and Patricia Ridout Kvasnicka and husband, Andrew, all of Prince George, Va. Mr. Ridout is also survived by five grandchildren, Sarah Churn Ragsdale and husband, Tyler, of Dinwiddie, Sonny Elizabeth Churn and fiancé, Bryan (BJ) Edwards, of Prince George, Rebecca Ridout and Ellen Bain Jones of Chesapeake, Va., and Bain Rives Kvasnicka of Prince George. Mr. Ridout was a graduate of Petersburg High School and was a veteran of the United States Air Force. He served from 1950 to 1954 as an aircraft and engine mechanic, and then as an instructor for aircraft and engine mechanics. After his military service he was employed by E.E. Titus Foundry for 20 years, and then he went to work for Sola Optical where he retired after 22 years of dedicated service as a machinist and supervisor. He was also an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing and hunting. A graveside service with military honors will be held at Blandford Cemetery at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 27, with Pastor Joseph Lewis of Second Baptist Church officiating. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Hospice of Virginia, 7231 Forest Ave., Suite 100, Richmond, VA 23226, or the American Cancer Society /Petersburg Unit, Wesy Chappell, 1117 Fort Hayes Drive, Petersburg, VA 23805.
