Erik Nils Amundson, age 34, passed away unexpectedly of natural causes on Thursday, March 20, 2008 during his shift at the Lucky Eagle Casino where he loved to work. He was born November 27, 1973 at Hill AFB in Ogden, Utah. He grew up in Ogden, Utah attending special education programs in elementary and high school graduating in 1993 from Bonneville High School. He loved to work in the school cafeteria which led him to work in the local restaurants. He enrolled in the Culinary Arts Program of the Ogden-Weber Applied Technology Center and successfully graduated with the help of job coaches and his special teacher and mentor Jack Jones in December of 1996. He worked in various restaurants and was devastated when he lost his job due to restaurant closure. In June of 2001 he moved with this family to Washington State so that his father could pursue work in the Oakville School District as Superintendent.
Erik hired on at the Lucky Eagle Casino in Rochester in August of 2002 and his work there became the number one aspect of his life. He was excited to go to work every day and never missed a day until he was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy 18 months ago. After 7 months at home recuperating the Lucky Eagle allowed him to return to his old position in the pantry and Erik was very very happy. He was ecstatic when he was chosen as Employee of the Month in 2003.
Erik was a gently and kind soul; he was always happy, and his work was his social life. The things that were important to him, in that order, were work, travel and family. His passion was traveling the world via cruise ship, Amtrak or airplanes and he already had the next cruise planned for 2009. Erik started participating in Special Olympics Utah approximately at age 9 and earned over 135 gold and silver medals in alpine skiing and swimming. He was an excellent swimmer due to his size and strength and competed with the Utah delegation at World Games in Raleigh in 1999; he also skied at Nationals in Steamboat Springs. When time allowed, he bowled with Olympics bowling a 205 as his highest game. He also enjoyed bowling with the Elma Fraternal League.
Erik loved the outdoors and outdoor work. He mowed acres of lawn, rototilled his own and neighbors gardens, cut down trees and shoveled snow for everyone. He felt great pride in helping other people. With lots of hard work he became an Eagle Scout and obtained a driver's license. He loved his family, enjoyed living at home and admired his older brother Per. We will remember him as a loving son who was always happy with a big heart. We miss his warmth and generosity, and he taught us that with hard work and positive attitude, anything is possible. Despite his limitations he accomplished so very much and led a fulfilling life with and traveling giving him much pleasure.
Erik is survived by his parents Robert and Lieselotte "Lilo" Amundson and his older brother Per Kristian Amundson, MD of St. Louis, MO.
