USS Long Beach (CLGN-160/CGN-160/CGN-9) A nuclear-powered guided missile cruiser in the United States Navy and the world's first nuclear-powered surface combatant. She was the third Navy ship named after the city of Long Beach, California.

Mr. Ralph Anthony Beck Sr., 71, passed away Sunday, May 27, 2012, at Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital in Florence, Ala., after a brief illness.

Mr. Beck was born Oct. 23, 1940, and was a native of Sugar Valley, PA. He was a 1958 graduate of the former Sugar Valley High School and a graduate of Christopher Newport College in Newport News, Va.

Ralph enlisted in the Navy in June 1958 and was one of the first in Clinton County to enlist in the Navy Nuclear training Program.

He was a retired nuclear health physicist from TVA and served in the Navy during the Vietnam era on the USS Long Beach.

Mr. Beck was a member of Killen United Methodist Church in Killen, Ala., and a member of the Lions Club.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Lois Ripka Beck; brother, Carl (Matilda) Beck; daughters, Kelly (Richard) Strnad and Tina (Reuben) Brackins; son, Ralph A. Beck Jr.; grandchildren, Maria Brackins, Samantha Jane (Matt) Armstrong, Amanda (Brandon) Zyxnfryx, Destiny Beck and Anthony Beck; great-grandchildren, Landen Beck, Ann Marie Armstrong and Lucca Zyxnfryx; and multiple nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, June 2, 2012, at Killen United Methodist Church, with Brother Bryan McIntyre officiating. A graveside service will be in Tylersville, Pa., and will be announced at a later date.
