Raymond Jacob Metzler was born in Evansville, Indiana on August 7, 1900 to Matthew W. Metzler and Theresa Kalkbrenner, both of German decent. His grandfather was Valentine A. He had several jobs as a young man in Evansville, including learning to be a Brick Layer. By 1923 he moved to South Bend, Indiana where he and his brother Matthew began working in the optics business, where Ray was a foreman. He married Margaret Alberta Harris on August 8, 1924. In 1928, they had a daughter Katherine Alice in South Bend before moving to Portland Oregon, where his son Richard Kenneth Metzler was born in 1930. In Portland, Ray managed a Sheet Metal business until his divorce. He moved to Eugene, Oregon for a short period (working as an optician), until he moved back to Evansville to work as an Optician for American Optical Company, living with his mother (Theresa) until her death in 1960. By 1962 he returned to Portland, Oregon, where he could visit with his son's family during his final years. His grandchildren knew him as a very kind and gentle man who loved to follow the sport of baseball. Ray passed away on May 19, 1973. He was 72.
