James graduated from the University of Georgia in 1869 as an honor student. Became a school teacher and later was principal of high schools in Forsyth, Jones, Butler and the Boys' High School in Atlanta. Later went into business as a loan broker. Married Mary Strother Royston, December 12, 1870, in Monroe County, Georgia.
