**Everett Verlin Akins married his first wife, Bertha Marie Limb at the home of the minister in Cameron, MO & their reception was held at the bride's parents, the Limb homestead.
**His second wife was the former Helen G. O'Haver.
**He served in the Army in World War II; was stationed in Holland, Germany, France, England, & Belgium
**I have the wooden Dutch shoes he brought back to my mom, Ethel Akins Long, from when he served overseas.
** According to his daughter, he went by Verlin before entering the Army, after that he went by Everett; somehow his older nieces & nephews started calling him "Uncle Pete" and that's what we knew him by.
**He was an ordained Baptist minister & served as pastor of the New Home Baptist Church in Halls, MO. He also was pastor of Grand Ave Mission on 15th & Grand in St Joe, a neighborhood mission sponsored by Savannah Ave Baptist Church, was minister there for 2-3 years. I remember going there as a child when I stayed with Uncle Pete & Aunt Bertha, it was so very hot & we had to use hand held paper fans to try & keep cool. One Sunday after church services we had watermelon & ate it outside on the sidewalk; oh so very good it was!
**He was a shoe cobbler for over 30 yrs. According to my dad, Jewell Doyle Long, he bought my grandfather's, George Washington Long's, shoe repair equipment & started his own business in St Joseph; had his own shop at his Mobil Station on Hwy 6, then on 11th & Pacific (2101 S 11th). He owned & operated Akins Shoe Repair at 26th & Lafayette streets (2711 Lafayette) in St Joseph for many years before he retired.
**I spent a lot of time at Uncle Pete & Aunt Bertha's house as a child and I always loved going there.
