Robert Joe Gretlein December 5, 1923 - May 26, 2012.
Military graveside services will be held at 1:15 PM Friday, June 1, 2012, at Bakersfield National Cemetery for Robert Joe Gretlein who died May 26, 2012. Bob was born December 5, 1923 in Bakersfield, California. He resided here his entire life and attended schools in McFarland and Bakersfield. During World War II he served with the Marines in the South Pacific 1942-1947 afterward beginning a 40 year career with General Petroleum (now Exxon-Mobil), retiring in 1986.
He is preceded in death by parents Ed and Helen; son Rod; brothers Raymond "Bud" (Joyce) and Richard "Dick" (Wanda); and sisters Edwina Ertel (Robert) and Helen Smith (Glen "Smitty"). He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mona; sister Mary Ann Stewart (Jerry); daughter Shirle Kathleen Hall; son David (Elaine); daughter-in-law Patty Newbold (Ed Short); grandchildren Adam Decker (Carolyn), Jeff Hall, Alex Gretlein (Arshia), Alyssa Gretlein, and Ryan Gretlein; great-grandchildren Ethan, Tyler, Benjamin, Nathan, Rehan and Heba; brother-in-law Harold "Harry" Hanes (Bernadean); and numerous nieces and nephews.
Bob was a good, quiet, kind, honest, and hardworking man and mentor who could build or fix almost anything and will be dearly remembered and missed. Hillcrest Memorial Park & Mortuary www.bakersfield.com/obits
