Mary Jean McGavock - Our precious daughter, Mary Jean McGavock, was drowned June 16, 1995 in the Snake River near Alpine, Wyoming, in a rafting accident.
She was born April 23, 1967 in Ogden, Utah to James Robert McGavock and Elese Marie Doxey McGavock. She attended Mar Lon Hills Elementary, South Ogden Junior High and was active in journalism and choir. She attended Bonneville High School and was active in Future Homemakers of America, member of DECA, Pep Club and Seminary, graduating in 1985. She attended Weber State University, graduating with a BS in elementary education. She was active in LDSSA, secretary of sports committee. A member of Lamda Delta Sigma, being treasurer and secretary.She received awards for service and supporting the role of women. Mary toured Europe with European Experience for six weeks, visiting seven countries.
She was a member of the South Ogden 5th Ward, and had received the LDS Young Women's Golden Medallion Award. She was a Primary teacher and Relief Society visiting teacher.
At the time of her death she was a member of the Bountiful Millstream Young Adult Ward.
A day-care provider, Mary had worked for Casper's Day Care Center for eight years. She was a substitute teacher in Ogden City and Weber School Districts until her death.
Mary Jean is survived by her parents of South Ogden; a special aunt, Jane O. Doxey of Ogden; aunts and uncle, Jean and John A. Lamb of Littleton, Colo.; and Laurel Doxey of Salt Lake City; special cousins, Judy Lee of Ogden; and Scott and Linda Lee of Roy; special cousin, Lori Lee, who was with Mary at the time of the accident; Michelle, Tami, and Marci Lee. Preceded in death by her grandparents and an uncle. Memorial services were October 21, 1995.
Her remains were recovered April 16, 1996, 10 months after she drowned.
Her body will be laid to rest at graveside services to be held Saturday, April 20, 1996, at 11 a.m., at Lindquist's Washignton Heights Memorial Park. Family will meet friends at Lindquist's Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd, on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m.
