He married Norma Jean Jewell on 28 Feb 1939 in Hocking Co., OH.
They had three children:
- Billie Jean Brown Sowers (1938-living)
- Thomas Preston Brown (1939-2011)
- Gary Richard Brown, Sr. (1942-living)
From age 5, Bill was raised by his paternal grandparents, William P. And Emma Mae (Colborn) Brown. Since he and his grandfather were both "William P. Brown", when his grandfather became unable to work in the coal mines of Athens Co., OH, Bill took his place when he was a young teenager.
He often told the story of how he met the love of his life. One day, when he was 18 years old, he saw the most beautiful girl he had ever seen walking down a dirt road. That was Norma Jean Jewell, and they married just two years later.
Life was hard in the 1930's and 1940's, and jobs weren't always plentiful. Bill enlisted in the military in order to provide a steady income for his family. During WWII, he was in the Merchant Marines. During the Korean War, he was a Marine drill instructor in San Diego.
By the early 1950's, he was working as a telephone installer and troubleshooter. Soon afterward, he moved his family to McArthur, Vinton Co., OH. He was known as "Brownie" by most everyone in town. A few years later, he was electrocuted when a line he was holding came into contact with a high voltage electric line. Luckily, he only suffered superficial burns on the palms of his hands and soles of his feet - but he did fall from the pole, causing a back injury which plagued him the rest of his life. He retired from the telephone company in 1981.
During his "retirement", he and Jean were managers of a laundromat as well as caretakers of a church campground. They were both active members of the Allensville Church of Christ in Christian Union, but they attended many local churches.
