Perle Penfield was the daughter of Capt. Charles Seymour Penfield and Susan Adella Potter. She was the second of four children.

She graduated from the University of Texas where she was one of a handful of women to graduate with a medical degree. She served in WWI as a physician along with her sister Mabel who was a physiotherapist.
After the war Perle practiced medicine for the remainder of her life except for a year that she took off from medicine to lobby in Iowa for womans' right to vote.

On Aug 3, 1922 she married George Stribling Newell (his second wife). The couple had one child:
*George Stribling Newell, Jr

Around 1920, with her family they moved to California where she practiced medicine in San Francisco and later in San Diego.
