After a three week's illness of pneumonia, at his home on Cedar Creek, this county, at 4 o'clock Wednesday morning, Mr. A. D. Newland passed from the living to the dead, in his 70th year. Although aware of his serious illness Mr. Newland believed he would recover and frequently spoke of what he intended doing as soon as he left his sick bed, but death's grasp was upon him and although the possessor of great will power he was swept down as grass before a cycle. Joining the Predestination Baptists in his early manhood, he has followed the teachings of that belief for nearly a half century, a great portion of which time he has spent in making his relatives, particularly the children of his brother Richard, who preceded him to the grave a number of years, happy, by doing what he could for their welfare.
Mr. Newland was born in Madison county and there lived till he was 35, when he moved to the place upon which he died. He was married early in life to Miss Sarah Cochran, of Madison, who during their long married life proved to be a most loving helpmeet and who is now left to mourn the loss of a kind and affectionate husband. No children blessed their union, but it was rarely ever the case but what one or more of his nephews or nieces surrounded the hearthstone of "Uncle Dud." He like all possessed peculiarities, but all in all he was a good man and did many acts of kindness that the outside world never knew, and we trust he is now receiving his reward. After a funeral discourse at his residence this morning at 11 o'clock his remains will be interred in Buffalo Cemetery by the side of his mother and other relatives. Mr. Newland amassed considerable money in his lifetime and his estate is said to be worth $25,000.
