The first born son of John Michael Connolly and Kate (Allen) Connolly. He spent his early childhood in Dallas Texas, his father being a manager at Swifts & Company. His sister, Joan, and young brother Douglas were born when the family lived in Dallas. They moved to Galveston Texas in 1938. Mike was attending the University of Texas in 1941 when the U.S. entered World War II. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served as a Radio Operator with the 999th Signal Service Company. His unit landed on Omaha Beach during the Normandy Invasion. They were in Niemur Belgium when the Germans launched the Ardennes offensive and the Battle of the Bulge. He served for the duration of the war and during the occupation of Germany. After the war he completed his Journalism degree from University of Texas and worked as a reporter for the San Antonio Express. In 1955 he married his wife, Marie. When the Korean War began he was a reserve officer in the U.S. Air Force and was called to active duty. He served in the Air Force into the 1970s as a public affairs officer. In March 1973 as a PAO he was on the first C-141 to land at Hanoi to bring home POWs released by the North Vietnamese. He rose to the rank of Colonel. In retirement he resided in San Antonio. Mike and Marie had one daughter, Mary Anne.
