Edgar was born in Newfoundland in 1900. His family had been in Newfoundland for several generations. His father was a sailmaker. He emigrated to the United States through the port of New York on August 1, 1919. Edgar was naturalized in 1925. He was initially working as a laborer in a cement plant.

In 1922, he married Marion Shriver Harlan. Marion was named after her aunt Marion Shriver. Edgar and Marion had three children together which are all linked below.

Edgar's father-in-law, Joseph Martin Harlan, was the Founder and President of the Union Stock Yard Company from 1895 until his death in 1941. Edgar also worked for the Union Stock Yard Company. He was a Clerk there in 1930 and became a Board Member in 1935. He served as Vice President for a while and became Treasurer where he spent most of his career. He worked there until he died in 1961.

He died at his home, 645 Knox Road, Wayne, Pennsylvania. His wife Marion would live another 13 years.
