Partial Obituary – Ellis County New Republican April 15, 1911, p. 4

Rufus Averill, son of Samuel and Sabrina Averill, was born in Lyndon, Vt., October 27th, 1833, and died at his home n Hays, Kansas, April 8, 1911, having lived to the good age of 77 years, five months and 12 days. While a boy he attended school in his native town and also in St. Johnsbury and Derby.

In the year 1860 he was united in marriage to Amanda M. Gould, and with her moved to a farm in Vermont, where he remained for a few years. He heard the call of his country in 1862 and enlisted as a volunteer and a 13th Vermont infantry. He was made second Lieutenant of Co. H, and was later promoted to 1st lieutenant and transferred to Co. I of this same regiment. At the close of his service in the army he returned to his home and family in Newport, and after a few years removed to Browningtown and remained there until his removal to Westport, on the shore of the beautiful Lake Willoughby, situated in the hills of the Green Mountain State.

Here for nearly 1/4 of century he owned and controlled a pleasure steamer on the waters of the lake and from this fact derived the title by which he was known by all his friends, Captain Averill. He was highly honored by his townsmen of Westmore. He held various town offices and was in the legislature of Vermont as the representative of Westmore in the year 1894.

Captain Averill was the father of four children, Josephine (Mrs. H.E. Robinson, of Laconia, N.H.), Thos. G., Mary M. (Mrs. C.H. Adkins, of Westmore) and Charles C. Mrs. Averill died in 1884, and a few years later Captain Averill was united in marriage to Emma McClain, of Canton, Ohio, walked the way of life with him for 25 years, ministered to him through his final sickness, and now longs for the touch of the vanished hand and the sound of the voice that is stilled. Two years ago in the coming month of May they came to haze and immediately bought the home, remodeled it and made things pleasant and comfortable.
He was a member of the Vance Post G.A.R. of Hays; Lodge No. 195 A.F. and A.M.; from early manhood he was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Citizen! Soldier! Legislator! Captain! Mason! Methodist! What a record he leaves for all who knew and loved him! No wonder his end was peace!

The funeral services were held at the Methodist Episcopal Church on Monday afternoon.
