He was born on Nov. 22, 1923 in Cissna Park, a son of Adam J. and Elizabeth Frank Knapp. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Melvin and Earl Knapp and one sister, Alma Dreyer. He married Verena Meiss on Dec. 21, 1947 in Danville. She survives.
Other survivors include three sons, Stan Knapp, Allen, Texas; Kevin (Dixie) Knapp, Bloomington and Keith (Kay) Knapp, Hoopeston; one daughter, Mardel Knapp, Bloomington; two brothers and three sisters-in-law, Charles Knapp, Bloomington; Wayne (Delores) Knapp, Watseka; Doris Knapp, Cissna Park and Mary Knapp, Bloomington; seven grandchildren, Alesa (Clint) Bahler, Lucas (Angie), Dustin, Spencer, Jennifer, Jackie and Jason Knapp and three great-grandchildren.
He served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II.
