George E. Fredrick, 62, of Scammon, died at 1:20 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, 2002, at Mt. Carmel Regional Medical Center, after a long illness. He was a patient in the hospital for 10 days.

He was born July 22, 1939, at Marble, Ark., to Clyde and Rachel Emma Walls Fredrick.

He lived at Scammon most of his life. He attended Stippville and Skidmore schools in Cherokee County.

Mr. Fredrick was a farmer most of his life.

He was a member of the Columbus Christian Center.

Survivors include two sisters, Bessie Bennett of Mabank, Texas and Sheryl Ray of Belton, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Eva Mae Hallam; and a brother, John Fredrick.

COLUMBUS, Kan. — Clyde Albert [Everet] Fredrick, 61 years old, of five miles north of Columbus, died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound in the head, early Friday morning at his home.

Investigating Deputy Charles Bowin of the Cherokee county sheriff's department, said Fredrick's body was found by his wife about 6:30 o'clock Friday morning. Mr. Fredrick died about 5:30 a.m., Coroner Dale V. Alquist also investigated the death.

Bowin said Mr. Fredrick's wife and two sons were asleep in the house, but did not hear the shot from the 22-rifle.

Born February 15, 1904, in Arkansas, Mr. Fredrick was a son of George and Mae Earney Fredrick. He was married to the former Rachail E. Walls January 22, 1938, at Marble, Ark. The couple resided in Marble four years before moving to Tahlequah, Okla., they lived three years before moving to the Columbus area. He was a farmer.

Surviving in addition to his widow and mother of Yakima, Wash., are two sons, George Fredrick and John Fredrick, both of the home; two daughters, Mrs. Bessie Bennett, Dallas, Tex., and Mrs. Eva Hallam, Scammon, Kan.; three brothers, Carl Fredrick, Pratt, Kan., and Charley Fredrick and Cogle Fredrick both of Yakima; three sisters, Mrs. Lettie Eaton, Scammon, and Mrs. Grace Brown and Mrs. Ethel Wages, both of Yakima.

Services will be at 10:30 o'clock Monday morning in Jorden chapel in Columbus. Burial will be in Columbus [Park] cemetery.
