Rufus grew up in Stewart, Hale County, Alabama. According to a cousin Rufus joined the confederate army and was driving cattle and supplies during the war.
She also said that Rufus attended the University of Alabama in 1860. I have yet to research this. If this is correct he was only about 15 years of age.

Rufus and Martha J. (Mattie) Pearre were married Nov 20, 1878 in Hale County, AL.

Sometime after 1900 Rufus sold his property at Stewart, Alabama and purchased a home in Birmingham, Alabama. Family stories said that sometime during the 1920's money was tight and the home was lost. All the children were adults by this time.

His obit in the Birmingham Post Herald was very brief. Body of Mr. Stewart, 76 who died yesterday at his residence was sent today to Stewart, Alabama for burial.

We searched the cemetery for a memorial for Rufus but could never find a one. We finally decided to see about putting a stone for him and Mattie in the Concord Cemetery. This is the community they lived and this is the cemetery where his father, Charles Stewart and his step-mother are buried. Also, members of Mattie's family. There was a place just in front of Charles' stone that was indented, no stone but we were sure this could possible be where they were buried. We lifted up the grass and sure enough there was small gravel under the grass and larger stones around in the shape of a grave. The caretaker of Concord gave us permission to place a memorial store as long as there was no body. We purchased a stone and gave Rufus and Mattie a final resting place.
This was done in loving memory by their grandson, John Mark Stewart.
