Spouse, Daughter Speeding in Place Unaware of Tragedy

While his wife and daughter were speeding westward by airplane to join him in San Francisco, Harden Lake Crawford, 58, retired New York banker, and brother-in-law of Philip T. Clay, president of Sherman, Clay & Co., died suddenly in Dante Sanatorium yesterday. Apoplexy is given as the cause of death.

Mrs. Crawford, the widow, and Miss Julia Crawford, the daughter, will arrive in San Francisco early today and learn of Crawford's death. Crawford arrived in San Francisco last Thursday by plane on a business trip. Apparently in good health, he was stricken while lunching with friends Tuesday. His death followed in less than twenty-four hours.

Crawford was born and educated in New York. He was graduated from Princeton with the class of '95 and went into the stock and bond business, becoming on the New York's prominent financiers. He was former president of the Century Bank of New York but retired a number of years ago.

In addition to Miss Julia Crawford, the banker leaves three other children, Mrs. John Ballentine of Pasadena, Harden L. Crawford Jr. of Piedmont, at present in Honolulu, and Clay Crawford of New York.
