Matthew Young and Roger Campbell were firefighters in the Flint Fire Department. They both perished while trying to rescue a 5 year old boy who slipped into the Flint River on 28 March 1980. The young boy was saved by another firefighter and his father but Young and Campbell were swept away by the 35 degree river current, succumbed to the frigid temperature, and drowned. Resuscitation efforts for both firefighters failed. His name is inscribed on the Michigan Fallen Heroes Memorial Monument, Stone 3, Row 21.
Campbell and Young had both joined the Flint Fire Department on March 28, 1977, exactly three years prior to their heroic, lifesaving efforts.
