Benjamin was born in Willshire Twp., Van Wert Co., Ohio, lost his mother when he was born and his father at the age of six. In 1850, he was living with Samuel and Lydia Crick. At the age of 18, he was residing with his brother, Jesse Hartzog. After his military service during the Civil War, he found work as a farm laborer in Mercer County, Ohio. By 1870, he was a retail grocer with a wife, Annie, and child, Florence. Benjamine was in Ohio City, Ohio until after August 1907 when he moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma Indian Territory.
