Gene Bartlett was the son of Sydney Almoth Bartlett and Lou Ella Williams Bartlett. He left home when he was 18, worked on a farm for wages in the summer of 1927 near Jamesport, MO, saved $100 and went to Kirksville, MO to enroll in N.E. Missouri State Teacher's College. He worked his way through college and graduated in three years. In August, the day after graduating, he hitched-hiked to Chicago to enter the Art Institute of Chicago. That was in 1930 and he didn't know until he got to the city there was a depression going on. That ended his art career. He met Thelma Joanne Davis in a soda shop while in college. They married December 22, 1930 and moved to Chicago for him to go to the Art Institute. He worked for Montgomery Ward in Chicago before moving to California. They had one daughter, six grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren.
