Fred, 71, of Columbus, passed away Saturday, June 2, 2012, in David City.
Fred was born April 11, 1941, in Columbus to Alvin and Arlene (Svec) Wachal. He attended school in Schuyler, graduating from Schuyler High School in 1959. He attended Creighton University, graduating from there in 1965.
On Feb. 4, 1967, Fred entered the U.S. Navy in Great Lakes, Ill. He served as a pharmacist in the Navy, retiring as a Lieutenant Commander in 1985.
Fred married Theresa Deal on Oct. 11, 1969, in Norfolk, Va. After completing his military service, Fred worked as pharmacy manager of Walgreen's in Columbus for 21 years.
Fred was a member of St. Isidore Catholic Church, a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, and a member of Hartman American Legion Post 84, the Nebraska Pharmacist Association, and the Platte County Historical Society.
He loved hunting, fishing, Polka music, NASCAR, Husker football, as well as collecting radio controlled airplanes, arrowheads and model trains.
Fred is survived by his wife, Theresa, of Columbus; daughter, Christiana Wachal, of Alexandria, Virginia; son, Christopher Wachal, of Chicago, Illinois; and sister, Annette (Robert) Vodehnal, of Schuyler.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
